1500 words in the next two nights. I can do this. I’m just hoping that I get sleep today. If I can sleep straight through the next 8-12 hours, I’ll be golden when I hit the keyboard tonight.

Did well today. 300 words this morning before I left work, and more this evening (obviously.) It’s always nice to find my groove. 24,000 words by this weekend is looking good. Probably more. I’m finding Purgatory comfortable, and I think Hell should be interesting. Maybe Dante? It’s time to research! To the Wikimobile!

I cannot catch up on sleep…

Two nights in a row I’m feeling run down and exhausted.

The past two days have been a wash. Instead of catching up on sleep, I was working. If I can get enough sleep today, I’ll probably get a thousand words out tonight. I should hit 24,000 by the weekend. I’m thinking that that won’t be enough to get me out of Act 1, but that’s OK.

Almost taking the easy way out

Posted by brenatevi on February 18, 2009

Inspiration is like crystal, if you hit it the right way, it rings sweet and clear. Inspiration has taken me the past week, and last night I’m pleased to announce that I wrote over 2000 words for my novel. It reminded me of a conversation with a perfect stranger on the Internet who asked me if I ever smoked marijuanna; I responded no, but who needs mind altering drugs when I can soak in inspiration? I can come up with mind blowing ideas without cheating.

(aside: the ladies at Bob Evans like my bluetooth keyboard.)

So last night I found myself with a momentary conundrum that I feel I sidestepped ably: I had no idea why a character had a messed up Heaven. I knew that it had to with his family, but the details eluded me. But I kept writing, creating and discarding ideas as my fingers tapped out words. I almost went with the “evil priest” route, sexual abuse and the entire cliche. But I hesitated. I had already been there two and a half times (one was a near miss…) and I didn’t want to cheapen it by overusing it (I think I’m handling it sensitively enough.)

So, I started thinking along other lines, like how does a bully become a bully? Ah, parents, gotta love them. And I damn near made the mother a “villain,” but following the thought, I came up with another idea: how would a bully’s father respond to being told, especially since he’s the reason the kid is a bully? Poor naive young Kyle. No wonder why he doesn’t think too high of Heaven.

Later, I’ll post about “villains” and trying to find sensical, non-evil motivations for them, because as the creator of Babylon 5 once said, villains never see themselves as the bad guy.

Starting anew with the old

Posted by brenatevi on February 16, 2009

There’s a “rule” out on the internet that the more made words in a story, the lower the quality of the story. I hate making up words; they just never sound quite right. So I’ve started digging into the past, looking at where the words we use came from. Consider the word “magic”. As someone that enjoys fantasy, is attempting to write some fantasy myself, it is a very important word. I needed a replacement for that word. “Magic” just doesn’t have any snap. It’s overused, and like a stretched out rubberband it just’s hard to keep a story together using it. So, I went looking to the past, using eytmology, the history of words, where it came from. Using etymology.com, I looked up magic and got a nice long list of words that are related to magic in one way or another, but it’s the word “wizard” that showed me the way: zinoti, zynyste, zynys, from Lithuanian. So, it might not exactly be old, but the roots are old.

I’m back!

Posted by brenatevi on February 12, 2009

I have written about 3000 words the past two nights, only a third of which were part of the novel. That’s ok. That’s 1000 more words than I had before. (blogging… the one addiction I have no regrets over.)

I’m going to finish posting Nightmare because it doesn’t feel right leaving unfinished (not sure anyone cares, except for me. :P) I’ll try to come up with some other Dreamer stories since I’m on a roll. There might be a speedbump when Puzzle Quest Galactrix is released, but it isn’t a true hard core game anyways.

Well, more later tonight.
